Dr Edward Bach
The Bach Flower Remedies were discovered by Dr Edward Bach, a respected physician, homeopath and bacteriologist in the 1930’s. Dr Bach believed that the ultimate cause of disease was a lack of inner harmony, and that by resolving this disharmony health would naturally return.
The remedies are gentle, safe, simple to use, non-toxic and non-addictive. They focus on the individual’s personality and emotions and their use helps gently restore balance, harmony and health.
There are 38 remedies in the system and Dr Bach categorised the remedies into 7 groups, identifying specific remedies for each group:
- For those who have fear – Mimulus, Aspen, Red Chestnut, Cherry Plum, Rock Rose
- For those who suffer uncertainty – Cerato, Gentian, Gorse, Hornbeam, Scleranthus, Wild Oat
- For those with insufficient interest in present circumstances – Chestnut Bud, Clematis, Honeysuckle, Mustard, Olive, White Chestnut, Wild Rose
- For loneliness – Heather, Impatiens, Water Violet
- For those over-sensitive to influences and ideas – Agrimony, Centaury, Holly, Walnut
- For despondency or despair – Crab Apple, Elm, Larch, Oak, Pine, Star of Bethlehem, Sweet Chestnut, Willow
- For over-care for the welfare of others – Beech, Chicory, Rock Water, Vervain, Vine
Each remedy is associated with a basic human emotion. For example, Mimulus is the remedy for fear or anxiety that has a definite nameable cause e.g. fear of the dark or fear of public speaking. The remedy encourages our natural strength and quiet courage and helps us face up to our anxieties and work through them.
In addition to the 38 individual flower remedies there is one ready mixed combination variously called the crisis mix and which is often known as Rescue Remedy. This is used in emergency situations when we feel traumatised, shocked or upset.
The act of taking the remedies seeks to raise our vibration, flooding the personality with the virtues of the flowers, and encouraging the positive emotional quality that lies dormant within us.
The remedies give us a language to describe how we feel, and they allow us to understand more how our emotional outlook affects our daily life and level of health and well-being. They remind us that our life experiences offer opportunities for self-discovery and self-awareness, and a greater understanding of our life purpose.
As a Bach Foundation Registered Practitioner, I am committed to upholding the philosophy, ethos and vision of Dr Bach by sharing my knowledge of the remedies with clients and promoting Dr Bach’s message of self-healing.
I provide a safe, supportive and confidential environment allowing you the opportunity to focus on and discuss your concerns, to talk about how you feel and to gain clarity over complex emotional situations. Starting with emotions at the surface of our awareness gives us the opportunity to deal first with our immediate concerns, and time to learn from the healing process. This learning is valuable in itself, encouraging greater self-awareness.
My role is that of facilitator and educator and our sessions will involve a working partnership helping you to identify your emotions and selecting helpful remedies. We will decide together the most appropriate mix of remedies to address your current situation and feelings.
The remedies do not create any adverse condition but, in gently peeling back layers of long-standing emotional difficulties, they may assist in bringing deeper issues into the open, restoring equilibrium at a pace that is right for you. In so doing a cleansing will naturally take place.
Some clients respond quickly when they take the remedies but for others improvements may be subtle and part of an ongoing process.
During our consultation I will teach you how to use the Bach system and in so doing guide you to greater personal involvement in achieving and maintaining good health and well-being.
The remedies work on many levels and may be helpful in acute emergency situations, for passing emotional moods, or more deep-seated emotions of longer duration. The remedies are an invaluable aid for those consciously working on their spiritual growth and development, allowing the soul to unfold at its own pace.
“Everything in nature is simple” and the system of healing discovered by Dr Bach can be used by anyone to heal their emotions and manage the emotional demands of their everyday lives
– the power is in our own hands.
